Naqbeni woman celebrates 100 years of love and family

She has lived through World War 2, the Great Depression, the scourge of apartheid, democracy and state capture.

Edith Baker Toohey of Nqabeni celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends recently. Born and raised in Nqabeni with her three siblings, she later married William Toohey and settled in Ixopo and had five children.

Much later the family moved back to Naqbeni and worked on the farm. Daughter, Pat Niemack said her mother has made a milestone of stories of her life.

“She has lived through World War 2, the Great Depression, the scourge of apartheid, democracy and state capture. When asked about her longevity, she said “God first in all you do.”

Edith used to drive and consistently kept the wheel turning as she was very much engaged in subsistence farming. She maintained her diet and has a wealth of knowledge and wisdom.
