Milestone moment for cricketing brothers

The winter league is abuzz with action.

Every now and then a really special moment occurs in sport.

This happened in the Southern KZN Winter league game between Gamalakhe Warriors and Challengers XI at the Port Shepstone borough ground, where Malamba brothers BJ and Zibu got to bat together for the first time in a match.

BJ, now 23, was on a short break from university studies and exams in the North West.
Zibu, only 12, was hanging around helping his father and coach Ben, eager to watch his older brother bat.

However, he was called on to fill in as one of the Warriors’ players couldn’t make it on the day.
Long story short, they put on a partnership of 35 before BJ, who opened the batting, was out brilliantly caught by Wilko Kunz off the bowling of Sphephelo Mlambo for 87.

BJ Malamba flicks one around the corner for four runs.

A few overs later Zibu, who had come in at number four, was forced to retire on 14 not out when he played a beamer of sorts and his bat broke and in the process he hurt his wrist. He should be fine though.
Earlier in the match Zibu picked up 1-17 off four overs.

Despite the brothers’ heroics, the Challengers somehow managed to win the game (see results below), thanks to some clutch bowling from rugged veteran Anton Potgieter.

BJ has since gone back to varsity, but no doubt, more of these days with his brother will follow.

Zibu Malamba charges in to bowl for Gamalakhe Warriors.
