South Coast Legends honours sports heroes at fundraiser in Uvongo

According to organiser Herman Flemming, funds raised support legends who are not financially secure.

Sporting and rugby legends who contributed much during their playing time were honoured at a function hosted by South Coast Legends at the Douglas Mitchell Sports Club in Uvongo recently.

This year marked three years that the event has been held on the South Coast.

Organiser Herman Flemming said funds raised at the event support legends who are not financially secure.

“We acknowledge that in their time, sports was played out of love of the game and not for a financial reward. We also want to ensure that the future generations know who these legends were and the legacy they left behind.”

The programme featured entertainment, tributes and an opportunity to connect with the legends.

Legends of note included Anton Barnard (Springbok), Thys Neethling (Eastern Transvaal cricket), Rudi Visagie (Springboks), Rob van der Merwe (provincial athletics), Piet Kruger (Springboks), Tabo Thomas (Northern Transvaal and Free State rugby), Martyn Nagtegaal (tennis SA), Willie Katzh (Springboks), Herman Flemming (Western Transvaal rugby), Thys Lourens (Springboks), Wynand Claasens (Springboks) and Danie Gerber (Springboks).

In their Springbok jerseys are (back, from left) Nick Frey, Joshua Sharkey, Kevin Albertus, Bill Myburgh and Kevin Douglas, with Zain Nel, Roxane Frey, Roeline Solomon, Leanne Myburgh and Anell May in front.
