Blue flags hoisted at St Mike’s, Mpenjati beaches
At Leisure Bay, the beach was officially recognised with a WESSA Green Flag for the first time.
South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise (SCTIE) and Ray Nkonyeni Municipality said they are ready for the holiday season at the hoisting of blue flags at Mpenjati and St Michael’s Beach last Friday.
The CEO of SCTIE, Vusumuzi Sibiya, welcomed holidaymakers and handed out goodie bags and travel information.
At Leisure Bay, the beach was officially recognised with a WESSA Green Flag for the first time.

Sibiya added that this achievement highlights Leisure Bay’s compliance with strict environmental management, safety and sustainability standards, reinforcing the South Coast’s commitment to responsible coastal tourism and conservation.
An official hoisting ceremony took place at St Michael’s Beach, celebrating its first-ever Blue Flag.
“This milestone further strengthens the KZN South Coast’s standing as the province with the highest number of Blue Flag beaches,” added Sibiya.
Stakeholders, including Tidy Towns Shelly Beach to Margate attended the ceremony, underscoring the strong partnerships that support internationally recognised beach management and environmental standards.

Both Blue Flag and Green Flag statuses are globally recognised indicators of quality infrastructure, environmental governance and key safety factors influencing residential, mixed-use and hospitality investment decisions.
Sibiya said these engagements demonstrate how strategic destination management, environmental excellence and strong partnerships work together to drive tourism growth and investor confidence.
“With beaches open for bathing and a diverse mix of coastal, lifestyle and cultural experiences on offer, the KZN South Coast is well positioned to welcome visitors and investors throughout the summer season and beyond.”
