Police warn public to be responsible during festive season

Close to 700 contact crime cases were reported in December 2024, many of these linked to excessive consumption of alcohol.

KZN police have stated that consumption of alcohol, more especially the misuse of alcohol, escalates during this time of the year.

Excessive use of alcohol affects cognitive functions, impairs vision and good judgement. It turns otherwise socially responsible individuals into irresponsible people, with life changing consequences for actions and decisions taken while under the influence.

Saps cautions the public against the overconsumption of alcohol which has been one of the leading contributing factors in crimes reported.

Arguments between people after excessive drinking over menial matters such as a pack of cigarettes or a bottle of beer results in violent confrontation – assaults, stabbings and shootings are the end results.

Close to 700 contact crime cases were reported during December 2024, many of these linked to excessive consumption of alcohol.

People walking home late at night from taverns, with their senses impaired become easy targets to criminals with the intent to rob, and their belongings taken by force.

Women who drink heavily become easy target for crimes such as rape or sexual assault as their senses are impaired and they are unable to stop attackers or remember what they looked like.

Road accidents and culpable homicides are often the result of misusing alcohol. Enforcement will continue over this period and last December, close to 200 people were arrested and charged for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The public is also reminded that consuming alcohol before swimming can be fatal.

While Saps has the responsibility of creating a safe and secure environment for all those wanting to enjoy a safe and peaceful festive season, the responsibility to consume alcohol responsibly lies with the individual.

Take reasonable precautions and decisions to ensure a responsible, safe and joyous festive season.
