14 tips to keep your hard-earned money as safe as possible

Do not display money in public.

Port Shepstone Saps has issued a warning to people to keep their money safe.

Here are pointers to make sure you keep your hard earned money safe:

* Do not ask for help from strangers at ATMs and always cover your PIN even if you are alone at the ATM.

* Carry as little cash as possible. Use alternative banking methods such as cellphone or internet banking.

* Do not display money in public.

* Keep your handbag and wallet safe. Wear your handbag across your chest and zipped up if possible. Do not at any time leave your handbag in the trolley while shopping.

* Arrange for stokvel saving to be deposited directly into your account instead of having large amounts of cash on your person or at home.

* Keep the date and amount of your stokvel withdrawal confidential. Have someone reliable accompany you if it is necessary to make cash withdrawals.

What you should do to prevent falling victim to scams and fraud:

* Never respond to emails or cellphone messages appearing to be from your bank, which request your personal details. Remember that no bank will ever ask you to confirm or update your account details by email.

* Never provide your online ID, password or PIN to anyone and never write them down or share them.

* Do not save your internet banking password on your desktop.

* Do not leave your computer unattended after you have entered your internet banking password and always log off or sign off at the end of a session.

* Avoid doing internet banking in public areas such as internet cafés, or on any computer that can be accessed by people you do not know.

* Change your PIN and passwords frequently and put sensible transaction limits on your accounts.

* Only provide your credit card details to reputable companies.

* Never send money or give credit card or online account details to anyone you do not know and trust.
