Nursing students focus on education, clinical skills

Assessments for the programme will include written examinations conducted at campus and practical assessments conducted at the clinical facilities where students are placed.

Port Shepstone Regional Hospital welcomed the R171 Group 1/2026 intake of Nursing Diploma students last Thursday, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen nursing education and clinical skills development within the district.

The programme comprises 25 students. Four of these students are in-service trainees drawn from health facilities within the province, namely one Enrolled Nursing Assistant (ENA) from RK Khan Hospital, one ENA from Gamalakhe Community Health Centre, one Enrolled Nurse (EN) from Umtentweni Clinic, and one ENA from GJ Crookes Hospital. The remaining students were selected from the local community.

The Diploma in Nursing programme spans a period of three years. Throughout the training period, students will alternate between theoretical learning at campus and practical clinical exposure. Students will spend one month at campus for theory, followed by two weeks of clinical placement at healthcare facilities. These placements will occur on a rotational basis across various institutions.

Clinical placements will include Port Shepstone Regional Hospital, Gamalakhe Community Health Centre, Mfundo Arnold Lushaba Community Health Centre, Marburg Clinic, Margate Clinic, Port Shepstone Clinic, Shelly Beach Clinic, Southport Clinic and Umtentweni Clinic.

At Port Shepstone Regional Hospital, students will complete their required clinical hours in several key service areas, including medical wards, surgical wards, the gynaecology ward, paediatric ward, Gateway Clinic, Medical Outpatient Departmen, Surgical Outpatient Department and the Eye Clinic. The curriculum is structured to ensure students are allocated for two weeks in each clinical area to allow comprehensive skills development and exposure.

Lecturers based at the campus will be responsible for academic support and oversight of students, while the Clinical Education and Training Unit team and ward-based clinical mentors will provide supervision, mentorship and guidance during clinical placements.

Assessments for the programme will include written examinations conducted at campus and practical assessments conducted at the clinical facilities where students are placed. All assessments will be facilitated and moderated by the nursing campus lecturers.

Port Shepstone Regional Hospital remains committed to supporting nursing education and contributing to the development of a competent and skilled nursing workforce to serve the healthcare needs of the community.
