SONA comes to taxi rank in Harding
Community members were able to access government services, receive clarity on social and economic programmes and were encouraged to ask questions.
As part of its ongoing efforts to take information directly to the people, the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) hosted a Pre-State of the Nation Address (Pre-SONA) taxi rank activation programme in Harding last Friday.
The activation formed part of GCIS’s grassroots communication programme aimed at ensuring that communities are well informed about key government programmes, priorities and services ahead of the upcoming SONA.
GCIS’s assistant director in Ugu District, Khanyiso Seyisi, said taxi ranks remain strategic platforms for reaching large segments of the public, particularly commuters and informal traders, making them ideal spaces for direct public engagement.
The initiative was supported by a wide range of government departments, municipalities, state entities and private sector stakeholders.
Seyisi added that through information desks, on-site engagements, and distribution of educational material, community members were afforded an opportunity to access government services, receive clarity on social and economic programmes and were encouraged to ask questions.
“Particular focus was placed on social assistance, healthcare services, economic opportunities, tourism promotion, and financial literacy, all of which are aligned with government’s developmental agenda. GCIS reiterates its commitment to strengthening participatory democracy by creating platforms that enable direct interaction between government and citizens. This is to ensure that no community is left behind in accessing information and understanding the national priorities that will be outlined in the SONA,” said Seyisi.
