Essential healthcare services taken to people of Umzumbe

Some of the services provided included diabetes screening, HIV testing, blood pressure monitoring, dental services, eye tests and cancer screening.

As part of its ongoing community outreach programme to bring health services closer to where people live, the KZN Department of Health under the leadership of MEC Nomagugu Simelane, hosted an imbizo at Buhlebethu Sports Field in Dumakude’s Ward 13 in Umzumbe last Thursday.

The programme affectionately known as Isibhedlela Kubantu is aimed at bringing essential healthcare services to people.

This imbizo was brought to the residents of Ward 13, where a highly contested by-election took place yesterday (Wednesday).

Ward 13 councillor candidate, Sibongiseni Cele addresses the gathering.

The assistant director of Government Communications and Information Systems, Khanyiso Seyisi, said the initiative forms part of the provincial government’s ongoing commitment to improving access to quality healthcare, particularly for communities in rural and underserved areas.

Seyisi said through this programme the department delivered a wide range of integrated health services on site, allowing community members to receive care without the need to travel long distances to health facilities.

“Services provided included voluntary counselling and testing, diabetes screening, HIV testing, blood pressure monitoring, dental services, eye tests and cancer screening, among others. Health professionals were also on hand to provide health education, promote healthy lifestyles and offer guidance on disease prevention and early detection. The event was well attended by community members, demonstrating the importance of taking healthcare services directly to the people and strengthening community-based healthcare interventions,” said Seyisi.
