Umzumbe’s new ward 13 councillor promises water delivery

Clr Bakhanyile Nobuhle Shozi plans to work closely with Ugu District Municipality.

The newly-elected councillor in Ward 13 in Umzumbe, the IFP’s Bakhanyile Nobuhle Shozi, is ready to face challenges head-on.

Shozi was elected in a by-election contested by the IFP, ANC, MK and NFP recently. She said her mission is to deal with water issues in the ward because people have not had running water in stand pipes for years.

Furthermore, the biggest challenge is getting water to flow out from taps and water trucks into the area.

“I will have to work closely with Ugu District Municipality, so that water is provided in the area. Our stand pipes are always dry, people wait for the water truck and then one hears that it cannot come through because it broke down on the way.” Shozi thanked people for trusting and supporting her.

“I am happy because people from all group ages voted, especially young people. What I have also noticed is that my ward has more young people, and unfortunately, most of them are unemployed. It will also be my duty to try to get them skills development, so that they can sustain themselves.

“Deputy chairperson of the IFP in Umzumbe, Jika Mthethwa, added that the previous councillor did not respect the community and when he was disciplined he resigned. Mthethwa said the IFP was defending Ward 13 and also had to make amends with the community due to the previous councillor’s actions.

“In the local elections in 2021 people were tired and decided to give the IFP a chance, but as we had someone in the party behaving in such a manner, we were doubtful whether our community will trust us again.”

He added that this by-election was for the party to redeem itself and show that it can still do more.
