New KZN Young Communist League chairperson hails from Ugu District

Delegates engaged in robust political discussions to map a path forward for the youth of the province.

The Young Communist League (YCL) in KZN successfully concluded its sixth elective provincial congress in Durban recently, where it reconfirmed the SA Communist Party’s (SACP) resolution to contest the upcoming local government elections.

Newly elected chairperson Sdumo Khowa from Gamalakhe in Ugu District said the gathering took place under the theme ‘organise, educate and agitate the youth for state power’.

Khowa said delegates engaged in robust political discussions to map a path forward for the youth of the province to pursue struggles of South Africans, teachers and workers, and reaffirm the alliance between the intellectual workers and the broader working class.

“Our congress took place at a historic and strategic moment for the broader liberation movement, convening shortly after the SACP resolved to contest the 2026 local government elections independently of the ANC. The YCL reaffirmed that while this electoral strategy marks a new phase in the tactical approach to the elections, it does not signal a rupture in the broader revolutionary alliance,” said Khowa.

Khowa said the gathering was at a time of intense political realignment. “The alliance with the ANC remains intact and unshaken. The SACP remains the vanguard of the working class and the primary driver of the national democratic revolution to ultimately achieve a socialist South Africa. Contesting the local government election is a strategic decision to strengthen the voice of the working class in the corridors of power, not to weaken the alliance against the real enemy of capitalism and exploitation,” said Khowa.

The conference resolved to deepen the struggle for socialism and improve the lives of the youth by strengthening the forces of the left, and resolved to intensify ideological work to build a united front of the left-wing and the working-class forces.

“This includes a specific focus on defending the rights of workers, informal traders, and the unemployed youth against monopoly capital. While the SACP will contest the 2026 elections independently, the congress mandated leadership to ensure that this tactical shift does not fracture the broader alliance and to engage with the ANC, COSATU, and SANCO to ensure that the motive forces remain united against the primary political adversary,” said Khowa.

Khowa said a resolution was taken to revitalise the Progressive Youth Alliance (PYA) to forge a united front of young people to champion a transformative agenda across all sectors of society and for free and decolonised education.

“The congress re-affirmed that education is a key terrain of the struggle and resolved to escalate the campaign to ensure that free, decolonised education becomes a reality in our lifetime. The YCL will work with the South African Students Congress (SASCO) and other PYA structures to fight against the commodification of education and for a curriculum that reflects the aspirations of the African majority,” said Khowa.
