Workshop talks responsive communication at Umzumbe Municipality

The session created a platform for knowledge sharing and alignment on communication priorities.

To strengthen communication among councillors and officials for effective, transparent, and responsive engagement with communities, a councillor communication capacity workshop was held at Umzumbe Municipality’s council chamber on March 24.

It was conducted in partnership with the South African Local Government Association, Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) and Ugu District Municipality.

Key focus areas included reputation management, combating misinformation and disinformation, effective use of social media, district communication status, the national communication policy, Umzumbe’s communication strategy, and crisis communication within the Ugu District.

GCIS regional communications coordinator Khanyiso Seyisi said the session brought together members of the municipality, executive committee, senior management, and communication practitioners, creating a platform for knowledge sharing and alignment on communication priorities.

“This initiative underscores the municipality’s commitment to improving communication systems, enhancing public trust, and ensuring that communities receive accurate and timely information.”

Seyisi added that GCIS is dedicated to building capacity in terms of communication in order for the municipality to be responsive and an informed local government that places communities at the centre of service delivery.
