Zack inspires Sages golfing grandpa Kevin

The LSC Sages, the society for over-50s golfers on the South Coast, enjoyed a successful Cansa golf day at Margate Country Club recently.

In a fitting parallel to the spirit, aims and goals of this event, Kevin and Brenda Oxenham decorated their golf cart with an array of bright orange balloons, photos and placards in a tribute to their grandson Zack Guest, who at the age of 2½ was diagnosed with leukaemia.

Zack, now five years old, is doing well thanks to regular chemotherapy. His parents are Allayne and Kimberleigh. They live in New Zealand, where Zack is one of the Child Cancer ambassadors.

Sages, Cansa and the wider golfing community wish this little warrior all the very best on his journey to recovery.

Kevin produced some of his best golf to win the day with Frik van Zyl on 48 points, counting out JP Myburgh and Des Potts.

In third place were Japie and Sandy Myburgh on 46 points, counting out Jenny Brewis and Heleen Hissey, who in turn counted out Basil King and Louis Smit.

Sixth spot went to Trevor and Ronald King on 45 points, on a countout from Johan and Lesley Erasmus, who in turn counted out Thys Bothma and John Ford.

Nearest the pins were Poen Olivier (2nd), Alan Tarr (4th), Lloyd Johnson (8th), Des Potts (11th) and Debbie Marx (16th).

Two-clubs were carded by Conrad Boonzaier, Alan Tarr, Wesley Middleton, Poen Olivier, Steve Senekal, Basil King, Des Potts, Frik van Zyl and Thys Bothma.

The competition attracted 80 players. Sages and Cansa thanked all sponsors, donors and contributors for making this event a success.

Fundraising started some three months ago and culminated in the organising committee raising in excess of R25 000 for Cansa.

A further R18 000 was raised in the form of goods, services and vouchers which were used for golf prizes and for auctioning to raise additional funds.
