Shaping young boys into value-driven men

The dialogue created a platform for mentorship, behavioural guidance, and social education.

At a dialogue at eSihlonyaneni Community Hall at eMathulini in Mtwalume recently, boys were encouraged to build respectful relationships, uphold discipline, and become advocates for the protection of women and children.

It was led by MEC for Social Development Department in KZN, Mbali Shinga. She said the aim was to shape young boys into responsible, value-driven men.

Former Ukhozi FM presenter, Sipho Mbatha (left) and Bazamile Dlulisa were in attendance.

The department said this initiative responds directly to pressing social challenges in the area, particularly the prevalence of gender-based violence and femicide, including targeted violence against young women based on sexual orientation.

“The programme reflects a preventative, community-based approach by the department, focusing on early intervention to reshape attitudes, behaviours, and social norms among young males. By prioritising outreach across all wards, the department demonstrates a commitment to inclusivity and to extending support services to vulnerable populations,” said Shinga.

The dialogue created a platform for mentorship, behavioural guidance, and social education. Key discussions addressed responsible conduct, the dangers of substance abuse, and the long-term consequences of premature sexual activity. Importantly, traditional leaders played a central role through the practice of ukudodisa – offering culturally grounded mentorship and guidance on manhood.

Former Ukhozi FM’s Sipho ‘DJ Sgqemeza’ Mbatha gave a motivational talk which stressed the importance of youth preservation and being grounded in morality and faith.

In her remarks, Shinga highlighted the link between high crime rates and limited economic development, noting that unsafe communities deter investment and growth. Programmes such as YOLO (You Only Leave Once) were cited as key tools in mentoring and empowering youth.

Furthermore, the MEC called for a collective societal effort in raising responsible young men, urging families, teachers, and communities to actively participate in their development.
