Schools' energy efficiency projects win awards

The winning schools received trophies, certificates, computers and LED lights.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) hosted a Schools Energy Efficiency Awareness Competition awards ceremony at its council chambers recently, to honour winning schools.

Technical services portfolio chairperson Lindiwe Ntanza said she was happy to see young teachers teaching learners how to implement energy saving methods because electricity is expensive nowadays.
“Young teachers, you are doing a great job teaching our children the necessary skills on efficient energy generation and consumption,” said Ntanza.

She added that the innovative learners did a great job in coming up with methods to save energy. “We are presenting prizes to the winning learners and schools. We are proud of their work and encourage them to continue doing good work,” said Ntanza.

Chibini Primary placed first, second place went to Thongasi Primary and Sthembinkosi Primary came third. The winning schools received trophies, certificates, computers and LED lights.

RNM’s electricity manager Nandi Sihlali said: “Learners had to be creative in their energy saving projects and the judges looked at efficiency and cost cutting measures. The municipality is also implementing energy saving and cost-cutting measures such as installing LED lights on our roads, in offices, halls and traffic lights. We want schools to implement these electricity cost cutting measures to reduce energy consumption.”

Sihlali added measures are in place to use solar energy. “We will look at implementing these measures in the next financial year. We encourage schools to use LED lights and implement measures to save on energy costs,” said Sihlali.
