Durban teams rule yet again at thunee competition

Some 100 teams took part in the tournament.

The thunee competition held at the Wild Coast Sun Hotel and Casino Resort on May 2, was a great success.

With R50 000 up for grabs, some 100 teams took part in the competition. Thunee is a popular Indian card game, played mostly by men in the past. Now women have joined in, as was evident at the tournament with husband and wife teams. As always the card game is as entertaining to watch as it is to play.

Taking second position in the thunee competition at the Wild Coast Sun Hotel and Casino Resort was father and son Dave and Ricardo Naidoo.

Local players turned up in their numbers hoping to win the title. Kevin Govender and Jason Govender came pretty close.

The winners were Strini Pillay and Lazarus Chetty from Chatsworth, with father and son Dave and Ricardo Naidoo from Tongaat taking second position and Kyle Reddy and Brandon Govender from Phoenix taking third.

Preggie Moodley and Denver Pillay get ready to play thunee.

The competition at the Wild Coast has been going strong for the last 14 years and attracts players from around the country. Event organiser, Anandh Perumall said: “This year the top 16 teams all walked away with prizes. Congratulations to all players and the winning teams for keeping the game of thunee alive.”

The next card game will be announced later in the year.
