Nine points to find out if you are a coffeeholic

  1. A day without coffee is not a day worth living and your body knows it.
  2. Your entire day revolves around that first cup.
  3. You finally understand the difference between good coffee and bad coffee.
  4. You have a go-to order.
  5. You silently (or verbally) start to judge people who only drink frappuccinos.
  6. You’ve experienced your first caffeine headache.
  7. You accept the fact that coffee now takes up a substantial amount of your finances.
  8. You can spend countless hours in your favourite local coffee shop.
  9. You truly believe coffee has changed your life for the better.

Umdoni Park Golf Club

Umdoni Park Golf Club, one of the hidden treasures of the South Coast, boasts breath-taking sea views from 70% of the golf course and is situated in 200 hectares of indigenous coastal forest. The par 5 eighteenth and par 3 sixteenth holes are both elevated tees, which makes the length judgment critical. The clubhouse has been recently renovated and offers spectacular views.

Umdoni Golf Course has a considerable reputation in Kwa-zulu Natal, being regarded as breathtakingly beautiful and hugely pleasurable to play.Measuring only 5 560 meters from the tips, it has certainly been adjudged a sufficiently stern test to merit hosting several top KZN amateur events. It is 18 holes over truly striking terrain, with the front 9 running alongside the sea and the back nine stretching inland through dense indigenous forest vegetation. Umdoni park is anything but flat and it’s elevation changes not only translate into an adventure of judgment and shot-making but provides any number of “view-site moments”.  On a fine day, lush fairways underfoot and with the ocean swells just breaking into whitecaps, a round at Umdoni is food for the soul – this is how golf is meant to be.

Southbroom Golf Club

Scenic stroll near the sea

Ranked #1 in  South Africa’s Most Fun Courses (Golf Digest December 2012), Southbroom Golf Club boasts one of the most popular golf courses on the lower South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. As an integral part of the Southbroom village, the course is a rare South African layout and if it wasn’t for all the palm trees and tropical foliage, you’d think you were in Britain or Ireland.

Only a stone’s throw from the Indian Ocean, Southbroom Golf Club affords golfers impressive views of pristine beaches and the sea; the tranquility of playing alongside the lush indigenous vegetation of the Frederika Nature Reserve; and an opportunity to feel the pride of the Southbroom village as the course meanders past elegant coastal residences.

Each of the 18-holes has its own unique feature and ability to test the skill of even the most accomplished golfer.

The Southbroom golf course is not a breeze to play especially when you experience it on a windy day. The par-3 fourth, just 114 meters, is the most famous of the two seaside holes. On a calm day it’s a wedge, but it’s a tiger when the wind is blowing into you. Water, in the form of both dams and rivers flowing to the sea, quietly but surely come into play and golfers need a careful game plan to negotiate this charming course.

Recently adjudged by Compleat Golfer to be the most popular club in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, the Southbroom golf course was established in 1938 and has consistently been improved and upgraded over the years. It always has a neat, manicured look about it and current improvements doubled the size of the green on the par-5 ninth which now sweeps towards the edge of a large water hazard that is hidden from view when playing your approach; and the relocation of the cart-path along the right hand boundary of the par-3 fourth.

The Southbroom Pro Shop, run by Derek & Sheena James, has an old-fashioned feel about it with every nook and cranny crammed with interesting goodies and lots of the latest golf gear. It’s a place where you’re assured of a warm welcome with everyone going out of their way to help you.

The clubhouse commands impressive views of the course and the Indian Ocean, affording opportunities for frequent whale and dolphin spotting, and lives up to the early expectations of “popular amenity and social centre” of the village.

Wild Coast Sun CC

Take a swing on the wild side

This iconic golf course without peer pretty much anywhere in the country in terms of some its unusual and breathtakingly spectacular holes. Recently it had some of its greens vandalised but news is that they’ve made a good recovery. The Wild Coast has hosted many prestigious tournaments over the years. In the 1980s the Nashua Skins were played there and attracted a lot of world class golfers, including the late Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, Nick Faldo, Nick Price, Mark McNulty, David Frost, Ian Woosnam, and Americans in the form of John Cook, Tim Simpson, among others. In later years, the Nashua SA Masters saw players Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Trevor Immelman, Charl Schwartzel, Louis Oosthuizen, among the top players on the Sunshine Tour, cut their teeth here. All would go on to win Majors but not all of them won at the ‘wild side’.

On a calm day, low scores can be recorded, but if the wind blows, it takes on a British Open feel where survival by keeping it out of the rough is of paramount importance. It has six par threes, which is unusual, and none of them are especially long. But they are all tight, and club selection is not as easy as it may seem, especially in swirling wind. The tee shot off the 12th hole – known as the Green Mamba – is played from what feels like the side of a mountain. That hole alone is worth the green fee and there are lots more just as rugged and fun to play. Provided you have plenty balls in the bag.

Flying the blue flag

The South Coast currently boasts seven Blue Flag Beaches. What does this mean? According to the Wessa website: “The Blue Flag is an international annual award which focuses on the environmental management of our coastline and coastal waters to help tourism growth and development. Although it’s a voluntary eco-label, it’s become an international symbol of quality for beaches, boats, and marinas that meet a standard of excellence in the areas of safety, amenities, cleanliness, environmental information, and environmental management.” More than 40 countries across the globe participate in the programme and South Africa was the first country outside Europe to be granted Blue Flag accreditation for its beaches.

Exploring rock pools

Rock pools are teeming with marine life and these mini-ecosystems offer endless hours of beach holiday fun, any time of year. If you’re exploring rock pools at the beach, remember these important rules:

Here are some fascinating marine creatures you may find in a rock pool:

Starfish
Starfish have hundreds of little tube
feet which they use to walk, stick to
rockfaces and respire. They have no
brain, heart or blood.
What they do have is a specialised
stomach. They can eject part of it out of
their body to digest food much bigger than their mouth, and then suck it all back in to finish digesting.
A starfish can drop an arm at will if it needs to. If one is grabbed by a hungry predator it will drop it off and make its escape, eventually growing a new arm to replace it.
Starfish are found in every ocean in the world
and there are over 2 000 known species.

Sea Anemones
Sea Anemones look like colourful, underwater blooms and get their name from the anemone flower.
They are in fact animals and are closely related to jellyfish and corals. They have no brain, heart or blood. Stinging tentacles help anemones catch tiny plankton which they draw into their mouths.

Crabs
Crabs are crustaceans along with crayfish and shrimp. Crabs have eight legs and two claws. Instead of having a bony skeleton, crustaceans have an external skeleton which protects their body like a suit of armour.
As they grow, they sometimes get too big for their shell. They wriggle out of a hatch in the back of the shell and grow themselves a whole new, bigger shell.

Welcome to our piece of paradise,

where the fun begins.

Dining out

You are spoilt for choice with a wide variety of restaurants, pubs and take-aways. Sample delicious local cuisine from quaint and quirky family-owned restaurants or the more upmarket eateries that offer an international flair to their menu.

Or you can also simply opt to while away the hours over a drink or two at one of the many terraced bars or cocktail lounges that overlook this fantastic coastline.

SUSPENSION BRIDGE & VIEW SITES

One of the main highlights for guests visiting Lake Eland Game Reserve is to walk across our 80m Suspension Bridge. Not only is it exhilarating to walk across the Suspension Bridge, but it is quite an achievement for many of us who are fearful of heights. The views from the Suspension Bridge are breathtaking and you will be inspired by the magnificence and grandeur of the Oribi Gorge.

We have a saying in South Africa “Africa isn’t for sissies” and this adventurous walk across the bridge is definitely not for the faint-hearted. For those of you who are still considering whether or not to take the challenge and cross the bridge when you next visit Lake Eland, maybe this might help: each cable that supports the Suspension Bridge can hold 70 tons, so unless you’re carrying all your gym weights in your pockets, you should be just fine!

If you can’t swim or do the doggie paddle at the very least, do not go near the water.

Avoid the beach if there is lightning forecast.

When heading out into the water be aware that the ocean floor can drop off unexpectedly.

Only swim at netted beaches and avoid swimming at dawn, dusk or at night when sharks are most active.

Keep a friend nearby in case either of you needs help.

Your ‘go-to’ in case of emergency:
NSRI 039 315 6973 and Ubuntu Lifeguards 072 481 1119

Riptide

Beware of rip currents. They pull even the strongest swimmer out to sea. If you do get pulled out into the ocean, stay calm, save your energy (let the current carry you). DO NOT try to swim against the current. Conserve your strength and start swimming parallel to the shore until you are out of the current. Then turn and swim towards the shore. If you can’t make the shore, wave your arms and make a noise.

Lifeguards

Lifeguards are there for a reason, as they know and can see things about the beach that most beachgoers don’t.
Take note of where they are stationed on the beach and stay near them when swimming.
Lifeguards are on duty from 7am to 5pm during weekends, public holidays and school holidays and from 7am to 6pm during the December season.
– Only swim in the areas designated as safe by lifeguards.
