South Coast netballers set to star
The two met through their love for netball.
NETBALL is set to soar to new heights in South Africa, and two South Coast players, Zandie Ndawonde and Chantal Bestwick, will be part of the exciting action.
They have recently been selected for the KwaZulu-Natal netball team, known as the Kingdom Stars, which will compete in a newly formed premier league.
Making the team came as something of a surprise to both of them. “My sister told me about the trials,” said Zandie. “I told Chantal and we both decided to give it a try,” she said.
They travelled to Hoy Park in Durban last month and despite being from a coastal town, settled in very well and played some excellent netball. The two friends said they were not expecting to make it into the team as the competition was tough.
Zandie and Chantal met in 2003, when they took part in the Kwanaloga Games and they’ve been friends ever since.
The new league, which was launched in April, is Africa’s first semi-profesional league. It starts on May 10 and will end with a final in June.
Chantal is vastly experienced, having played for the Mermaids in 2004, as well as for the KZN U19, U21 and U23 action netball teams, while Zandie has lots of inter-provincial experience.
Teams from all nine provinces will compete over a five week period, with all the matches taking place in the Rembrandt Hall at the University of Pretoria. The matches will be broadcast live on SuperSport on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the competition.
So, between now and the start of the league, it will be nothing but hard training for the two players!
The players thanked Ugu District Municipality for helping with transport. They also thanked their family and friends for their support. If anyone is interested in sponsoring the two players, or even the team, in any way, contact Chantal at 082 4193226.
