Rugby 7s speedsters raring to go
The day won't only be about rugby as there will be loads of other entertainment, including a jumping castle for children, and a beer garden for thirsty fans.
THE Nashua South Coast 7s tournament is back by popular demand. It will be played at the Douglas Mitchell Sports Grounds this Saturday, February 7.
Started last year more as a means to hone skills and up pre-season fitness levels, the tournament was such a success that 16 teams have entered this year and fans will be able to watch 44 games. All in one day.
“The great turnout and atmosphere we had last year made it a foregone conclusion that we would continue in 2015. It has already been highlighted by NRU and will become an annual event,” said Christo Henderson, South Coast Warriors’ head coach.
Sevens is obviously very similar to regular rugby but in sevens each team has three forwards and four backs, each half is seven minutes long, with a two minute half-time break.
Five substitutes may be used. Harlequins are the defending champions and will be a tough one to crack.
“In sevens rugby one wrong or right move can change a game very quickly,” said Henderson. He hopes one of the four Warriors teams can bring home the trophy this year.
The club thanked Clive Mclean of Nashua for the sponsorship and contribution to Warriors rugby.
“The key to winning at sevens is to have patience, a good combination between speed and strength, team work and great defence,” said Henderson.
Sevens rugby is about speed and some of the local ‘gas men’ to look out for include Marcell Sass and Tienie Viljoen, while youngster Ryan Elliott is showing some serious pace.
Some of the forwards are surprisingly quick too.

The rugby will start at 8am and go through until about 5pm. There will be BlitzBokke rugby televised as well.
