Day 1: No real surprises here

The opening day went pretty much as expected.

NEW Zealand and Australia both made impressive statements on Day 1 of the Cricket World Cup.

After all the razzle of the opening ceremonies, they got down to business and comprehensively beat their respective opponents, Sri Lanka and England.

These results came as no huge surprise, as both teams have been in superb form of late.

When you consider that Australia left Michael Clarke and Pat Cummins on the bench, and have James Faulkner recovering from injury, then one understands why they are the favourites.

England have been woeful, and this latest result will no doubt have Kevin Pietersen reaching his phone for a tweet.

Score:

New Zealand 331/6. Sri Lanka 233/10.

Australia 342/9. England 231/10.
