Hoenders handle the Shootout heat

The popular Applied Outsourcing Southbroom International Shootout had new winners this year.

THE Hartzenbergfontein Hoenders (yes, that’s really the team’s name) clinched the Southbroom International Shootout at the magnificently manicured Southbroom Golf Club last weekend.
The team comprised Andrew Civin, his father Les, Gavin Sole and David Rush.
Played over three days, the tournament attracted players from France, England, Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Scotland, as well as Johannesburg, and obviously locally.
The first day was alliance, followed by betterball Stableford, and then individual Stableford where three of the four scores counted.
The team was led by the determined, if slightly-less-than-phlegmatic Andrew Civin. In temperament he’s more Tiger than Trevino, more Faldo than Fuzzy.
He’s been a member at the club since he was about 10 years old and no one was more pleased to win than him.
“It’s great to win after six attempts at trying,” he said. “I love coming to play here, it’s a special place,” he added, before encouraging the foreigners to keep making the trip out to Southbroom at this time of year.
The win did not come without some drama.
On Day 1 David added up the score incorrectly. Fortunately he had marked the gross scores correctly.
According to the rules of golf a player is not responsible for adding up his score or even marking down the Stableford points.
So there was to be no disqualification necessary despite writing down 93 instead of 92. And no teammates flew back to Joburg, thankfully.
On Day 2 Andrew had what can best be described as a brain-fart, opting to rake the bunker on the 6th hole before he fluffed his shot just out of the sand.
His father Les, one of the country’s finest and calmest legal minds, duly called the penalty. But fortunately it did not matter as David managed to successfully three-putt for par.
On Day 3, with the team playing catch-up, Gavin Sole, who had been hitting his driver straighter than a road through the Free State, chose to hit a 2-iron off the 9th hole.
The defensive tactic from the province’s number one ranked player led to a bogey six, which considering the wind, was more like a double bogey.
In a way it served a purpose as it irritated him enough to play the back nine in six under par 30. Over the three days, Gavin had rounds of 66, 69 and 65.
