Day 6: Zimbabwe pull through
A major upset at the hands of Zimbabwe is brewing.
FOR many South Africans, supporting Zimbabwe in a World Cup is a bit like supporting South Africa B.
They’re our neighbours and we care about them, especially after all the troubles they’ve had.
We want them to win, just not against us.
They had a few moments against the UAE today where panic could have set in, but they kept their cool and eventually eased to a four wicket win.
UAE made 286/6 and Zim were in a spot of bother at 167/5 before Sean Williams and Craig Ervine combined to steer Zim just about home.
Ervine got out with about 30 runs to go, leaving captain Elton Chigumbura to help Williams get their team across the line.
Williams did this in some style, cracking three four in a row to seal victory in the 48th over.
Zimbabwe can now look forward to a match against the West Indies on Tuesday, February 24. They’ll certainly fancy their chances.
Now… if Zim can sneak past the Windies, and beat Ireland, and other games go the right way, this may serve SA well.
Hear me out: If New Zealand finish top, then they could possibly play B4 (Zim) meaning that someone else (perhaps India) knockout Australia…making it easier for South Africa?
But there’s a very long way to go of course…
Next game: Friday, February 20 – New Zealand vs England.
