Young ‘birdie’ needs (aeroplane) wings
The family is doing what it can to make the dream come true
GOLFER Simoné Ferreira (9) of Margate Country Club has her sights set on the opportunity of a lifetime trip to the United States of America. But she needs to raise funds, and her mom Anet needs to sell a lot of doughnuts to make it happen.
She was on the winner’s podium again last Sunday, this time at Durban Country Club’s Beachwood course, for an SA Kids’ tournament, where she won her age group.
It was perhaps something of an ‘untidy’ win, with a number of three-putts during the round, and a semi-shank on the par three 18th hole.
“It was very humid made more so by the moisture off the ocean, but no excuses,” said her father Petrus.
“Simoné will need to work on her putting on faster greens but it will come in time,” he added.
By winning, Simoné was chosen for the Under 11 SA Kids’ team to play at Serengeti in Gauteng this weekend.
In the meantime, her father is trying to raise the funds needed to get her to the USA to play in the US Kids’ Golf World Championship at Pinehurst, North Carolina.
It takes place from July 27 to August 2.
US Kids’ Golf is a non-profit organisation, so golfers need to pay their own way.
Last year’s field featured more than 1 800 entrants (including the World Teen Champs) from 47 states and 45 countries.
The champs will be held on several courses throughout the Pinehurst and Southern Pines area.
SA Kids’ Golf has been in operation since 2005 and is supported by the SA Golf Association (SAGA) and the PGA of South Africa.
“The road seems long and lonely but we’ll take it a day at a time,” said Petrus.
Six doughnuts cost R20 or buy 12 for R40. Petrus can be contacted at 081 3071250.
