THE South Coast Warriors successfully defended their Usher Cup rugby trophy at Douglas Mitchell Sports Ground last Saturday.
The tournament was sponsored by Halfway Toyota and the festival of rugby, which attracted numerous teams from surrounding areas, was a resounding success.
Teams on the day consisted of Warriors, Amangcesha, Gamalakhe, Kapaailand, Ixopo, Harding, Kokstad and Matatiele. Unfortunately Scottburgh withdrew.
The competition on the day was described as ‘fierce’ by Warriors’ head coach Christo Henderson.
He also felt that the difference in strength between first and third division clubs wasn’t as great any more.
“The Warriors were outstanding on the day, only conceding one penalty and no tries,” he said, adding that they scored 20 tries in total.
He said that the performances put in by the Warriors were an indication that the club could be in for a very good league season.
The only negative was a toe injury sustained by prop Jaco Coetzee.
Arnold Kruger scored the most points for the Warriors, 37, including three tries.
Scrumhalf Chris Mitchell scored three tries and was named as player of the tournament.
The players now have three weeks to get some rest before the first league game on April 11.
The Warriors beat Amangcesha 47-0, Harding 26-0, Ixopo 26-0, Kapaailand 17-3 and Kokstad 20-0.
