BASIL Naidoo of Greater Durban Golf Club won the recent KZN Senior Open at Umhlali Country Club on scores of 76 and 74.
He edged in one shot ahead of Royal Durban’s Lynton Beckett, who had 76 and 75.
In a tie for third spot were Kevin Curren of Durban Country Club on 73 and 79 and Colin Weinstein of Modderfontein GC on 78 and 74.
Weinstein also won the Super Senior section (over 60) from Dennis Jones of East London Golf Club, who had 77 and 76.
The B division was won by Mike Simon of Royal Johannesburg on 78 points.
Brian Olsen of Bluff National Park was second on 76 points, followed by Rob Duncan of Mount Edgecombe Country Club on 73 points.
The SA Senior IPT will be played at Ebotse and Benoni from April 13 to 17.
The KZN team is Basil Naidoo (captain – Greater Durban), Lynton Beckett (Royal Durban), Kevin Curren (Durban CC), Brian Dougherty (Umhlali), Phillip Grant (Durban CC), Grant Lister-James (Durban CC), Morgan Phillips (Maritzburg GC), Alex Pillay (Tanglewood).
Super seniors are Hennie Heyns (Mount Edgecombe), Poenie Holm (Durban CC), Richard Nel (Maritzburg GC), Peter Smith (Mt Edgecombe CC).
The manager is Brian Olsen (Bluff National Park).
* MOUNT Edgecombe maintained their unbeaten record in the premier league with a comfortable 8,5-3,5 win over Umhlali Country Club at Umhlali last Sunday.
“The result doesn’t really show it but it was a lot closer than it looked. Three games went down the 18th and we threw some birdies at them. It was a good fight with things going our way at the end,” said Mount Edgecombe captain David Brown.
Brown’s team will now be preparing for a home game against Durban CC ‘1’ on April 19.
If they get through this game, and they should considering Durban CC’s patchy form so far this year, then it will give them some significant breathing space at the top of the log.
In the other games, Kloof almost upset Durban CC in Durban, with the past champions seeing off the two-time defending champions, 6,5-5,5.
“It was very close and we nearly got them on their own track,” said Kloof captain Guy O’Connor.
Southern KwaZulu-Natal somehow scraped a 6,5-5,5 win over Cotswold Downs at Southbroom.
The result came as a relief to Southern KZN.
Cotswold Downs, meanwhile, look like they’ll cause some problems for the other teams going forward, especially at home but also away.
Toti were due to play Durban CC ‘2’ at Beachwood but the game was postponed due to a fixtures clash.
The next round is on April 19.
Toti host Cotswold Downs, Kloof are at home to Durban CC ‘2’, Mount Edgecombe host Durban CC ‘1’ and Royal Durban travel to Southbroom to play Southern KZN.
Umhlali will have a bye.
