REPEAT WINS FOR GAVIN AND HEATHER
GAVIN Sole shot 67 and 70 to win the Southbroom Golf Club strokeplay championships for the fourth time in a row and the sixth time overall.
“It’s nice to win, but it’s the tournament I feel the most pressure at,” he said. “People come up to me and say ‘you can’t lose this’ but you know how golf is, you can take nothing for granted.”
He said he putted really well on the Saturday and with a generous lead, basically just kept the ball in play on Sunday,
“I’ve been holding my follow-through with the putts, something Derek James does really well. Holing those crunch putts helped me keep the round going,” he said.
Marc Bormann, a winner in 2006, was second on scores of 70 and 74.
Gary Purtell was third on 76 and 77, followed by Chris Poole, who had 73 and 81.
The second best five handicapper in the southern hemisphere, Mike Anthony, was fifth on 80 and 76.
In case you are wondering, Marc Bormann would have to be the best five handicapper. But unlike Mike, his handicap is set to get a mighty slash.
Russel Mackenzie won the B division by a country mile, shooting an eye-watering 74 on Day 2 to add to his first round of 80.
If he’s not careful, he may get a call up for premier league.
George Haynes was second on 86 and 83, followed by Dries Barkhuizen on 81 and 90.
Malcolm Moorley charged home on Sunday to win the C division with rounds of 34 and 39 points.
Simon Shusha was next on 37 and 34 points, with Joe Carolan, Gary Brackley and Brian Brasher all on 68 points.
Heather Anderson, a past Scottish international, defended her title in the women’s section, beating past champion Janet Humphrey by 10 shots, scoring two rounds of 82.
She was thrilled with what was her third win overall now. “I still get nervous, no matter how often I play these events,” she said.
Despite a double bogey on the 14th (her first nine) she was steady enough.
“There was nothing too exciting and I managed to hold it together, except on the 14th where I couldn’t get out of the bunker, and on the 7th where I put one in the water,” she said.
However, the highlight of the weekend for her, and many others, was watching Russel miraculously beat Gavin in the Saturday night putting competition.
Yes Gavin, tell us about that: “Well, for a start it was dark, he was using a short putter (usually Russel uses a long putter) and he had had a few drinks,” laughed Gavin.
“Plus he holed the most difficult putt on the green, over a slope with a big break!”
Irene Schanda won the Bronze division on 193, with Augustine D’Ewes runner-up on 204 and Lorraine Cook in third on 207.
Julie Walker won the Bronze Stableford on 61 points, followed by Jeanette Peyios on 50 points.
Overall nett went to Rene Matthew on 153, from Eileen Neilson on 155.
