Masterful swims from Mandy and Huibert
The two swimmers have shown that they still have what it takes.
THE South Coast had two swimmers competing in the 31st Masters Nationals in Johannesburg recently, namely Mandy Koegelenberg from Sea Park and Huibert Phielix from Port Edward.
Mandy, who is the coach of Blue Ocean Aquatics swim club, competed in the 800m, 400m and 100m freestyle events, and the 50m, 100m, 200m backstroke events as well as a relay.
She swam exceptionally well, bettering her times in all the events except the 800m freestyle.
She brought home a silver medal for the 200m backstroke in a time of 3.00.39 and a bronze in the 100m backstroke in a time of 1.21.78.
In all her other events she placed fourth.
Huibert won silver medals for second places in the 200m and 100m breaststroke in the 70-74 years age group.
He also won a bronze medal in the 50m breaststroke and 4x50m men’s medley relay in the 200+ (combined) age group.
It was a great finish to a very successful season and both swimmers now look forward to next year’s masters event which will be held in Durban.
