Golf stars light up Sheppie at KZN Open

THE cream of South Africa’s amateur golf crop graced the coastal course’s fairways last weekend.
Tristen Strydom lived up to his billing as the country’s top-ranked amateur when he won the KwaZulu-Natal Open Strokeplay at Port Shepstone CC.
The Serengeti Golf Club player produced rounds of 69, 65, 66 and 70 to win by five from Royal Cape’s Sean Bradley who finished with a 66.
Margate’s Jan McDermott, who finished further down the field in 53rd, pretty much summed up what a lot of players felt after seeing the quality of the scoring.
“How’s that -18? I won’t leave my day job,” he quipped. McDermott had rounds of 74, 78, 72, 78.
Best of the KZN players was Siyanda Mwandla of Mount Edgecombe CC. He had rounds of 74, 70, 73 and 69 to claim a tie for 11th place.
Marc Bormann of Southbroom was 61st on scores of 80, 71, 75 and 79, and is still seeking the consistency he knows he is capable of.
“I could feel the swing coming apart at times,” he said. Despite this, he managed respectable scores.
Margate CC’s Patrick Mavundla had some magic moments, but some he would like to have over, or forget!
In the third round, he got ‘hot’, and was three under after eight holes.
But it came apart on the 18th (his ninth of the day) where he made a horrible quadruple eight.
“I hit my ball into the trees and had to take a penalty drop, then I hit it over the green and then into the bunker,” explained Mavundla.
He eventually ended in 66th place on scores of 72, 77, 81 and 78.
“To tell you the truth I was nervous but making it through to the final round made me happy. I can even see myself competing with the big guys,” said Mavundla.

THE Golf Captains’ Society of KZN’s next event will be the Gerry Shuttleworth Memorial Trophy (fourball alliance) at Kloof Country Club on Monday, May 25.
The after dinner speaker is PGA South Africa Coach of the Year, Steve Cottingham.
Membership of the society is limited to current and past captains of KZN golf clubs, or KZN representative golf teams.
“We get together twice a year, for a game of golf, a hearty meal, some welcome drinks, and good fellowship. We would love some ‘young blood’ to join us,” said the society’s captain Devlyn Fraser.
