IT’S that time of the year again when the coast’s most enthusiastic runners put takkie to tar and take on the mighty Comrades Marathon.
This year it’s an up-run, from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.
The 90th edition of the race will be run this Sunday, May 31, starting at the Durban City Hall at 5.30am and ending 12 hours later at the Oval Cricket Stadium in Pietermaritzburg, covering a distance of 87km.
About 64 runners will be competing in South Coast Striders colours.
Joining the regulars this year are a number of novices, including Bernardt Keudel-Schaffer, Cathy Mather-Pike, Gavin Mackie, Zandile Dunywa, Liezle Dudley, Sally-anne Anthony, Sandra Robertson, Freek Stander, Guy Dudley, Martin Venter, Trevor Burger and Jesse Verster jnr.
Coming back after a very long absence from Comrades are Nkosinathi Shonga, who has completed three, and Arthur Flascas who has completed eight.
Neville Storbeck and Matthew Lindebaum will be going for their back-to-back medals, having completed their first last year.
Graham Christensen, who is in great form this year, will be making sure he finishes this one after several near misses.
Zwelitsha Tiger Gono will be doing his 38th.
