Mtwalume come tops again
Lunatics Volleyball Club hosted a successful tournament at the Marburg Sports Complex.
THE third volleyball knockout final of the year turned out to be the closest one yet, as Mtwalume battled City Boyz VC in an epic match.
Lunatics Volleyball Club hosted a very successful volleyball tournament last Saturday at the Marburg Sports Complex. In a first for Port Shepstone volleyball, tournament directors had to adjust the knockout structure to accommodate the current load-shedding schedule. The main aim was to complete all group matches before 6pm and continue with the semi-final and final after 8pm.
All matches during the group stages were played as a best of three sets, with a maximum of 15 points in the first two sets and an uncapped 15 point final set if needed. Many of the more senior players would have remembered this scoring system from the earlier 1990s.
In the premier section, Mtwalume and City Boyz VC made it through the group of death, as both teams disposed of tournament hosts Lunatics, to secure a semi-final spot. In group A, Avengers VC and the legendary Paragon VC finished first and second respectively. Avengers VC recently acquired the services of renowned volleyball stalwarts, Logan Moonsamy and Timmy Reddy, who between themselves have over 50 years of volleyball experience. This proved influential as Avengers finished unbeaten after the group stages.
When the lights finally came back on, the semi-final resumed and Mtwalume went on to beat Paragon and City Boyz took out Avengers to set up a group B rematch.
The tense final eventually saw Mtwalume go on to claim their third successive knockout trophy. The social section proved to be popular once again as several teams entered to claim the title as “best social team in town”.
In a repeat of the previous knockout final, Jumperz took on Potter House Ministries. Jumperz went on to avenge that final defeat by winning the social section.
