A golfing star is born at Sheppie
The hockey player has now turned her focus to golf.
KIM Strauss produced a par of note on the last hole to win the Port Shepstone Country Club strokeplay champs, sponsored by the South Coast Herald, for the first time.
She beat a quality field, which included provincial player Lizzie Currie, past provincial player Colleen Eaton, and defending champion Yzelle Greyling.
The former hockey star carded rounds of 79 and 79, but it was the closing par which showed that she has some serious mettle.
Her tee shot nearly ended on the cricket field, and she got lucky in that she found the ball. But she had no, or very little backswing.
“I’ll just have to use my hockey skills,” she quipped, before clipping the ball back into play.
From there she knocked a wedge to about 15ft and holed the putt.
Playing behind, Lizzie needed a birdie to tie. Her long range putt looked good for a while, but broke away from the hole rather sharply at the end.
She had round of 83 and 76, and was hindered somewhat by a knee ailment.
The two young players, both still fairly new to tournament golf (Kim especially so) look likely to keep Sheppie on the golfing map for some time to come.
