Prepare yourself – there could be another sardine run soon

IT seems most of us were unprepared for a sardine run and were caught off guard when shoals emerged on our doorstep last Thursday.
There was plenty of activity all over, with bronze whalers pushing those little silver fish right in!
Fishermen on the points were hooking some big sharks but not able to land any.
Regan Hutson confirmed the presence of the sharks, saying that there were about six copper shark, each of about 30kg, literally at his feet.
Shad have made a huge appearance all over, with much better sizes being caught, with the odd kob and kingie in between them.
There was a big shoal of garrick off Margate point that ‘hammered’ the shad, with no one fishing for them.
There has also been plenty of bird activity, especially in the Port Edward area.
Meanwhile, in Port Edward, Terry Nel was feeling positive.
“Talking of sardines last week, the very next day they made a show in Port Edward. Then, the the following day, several small pockets were seen close to the shore. Then came the big winds and sea and the shoals moved up and were netted off Margate beach,” said Terry.
He said that news came in on Monday this week of big shoals further south. “If trawlers are kept out of limits, many will see a true sardine run for the first time in their lives,” he added.
