TWO good things are happening on South Coast tennis courts at the moment.
The first is that the Southern Counties league has been revived, with matches now being played on Saturdays, ahead of regular social tennis.
The competition is quite strong, too, with a number of younger players getting involved, taking on the wily veterans.
Then, the annual seniors’ tournament is just around the corner, and will be held from July 17 to 19.
Matches will be played at Uvongo and Douglas Mitchell courts.
Uvongo has benefited from renovations, with the upgrade modernising all the existing facilities and adding a few more, like hot showers!
There is a great deal of planning and work being done to ensure the tournament is once again a success.
It is expected to involve between 60 to 70 local players, as well as numerous visitors from other provinces.
The tournament has also helped generate revenue for other businesses in the area.

Balmy weather at Tweni TC
IT has been a busy time for Umtentweni Tennis Club this month.
Two weeks ago there was near-perfect weather for Saturday tennis, with five courts in action, and others sitting off and socialising, including none other than Peggy Igesund.
The last of the Southern Counties’ friendly fixtures was played and Tweni Orange beat Tweni Blue with everyone who wanted to play having a turn.
Grateful thanks go to Trish and Grant Wood for always sending the bulk emails to members thus keeping all informed of what’s happening at the club.
Cathy Barker once again supplemented the eats with her delicious array of fruit and snacks. Thank you to all of you. Members are pleased to see Grant back on the courts again and hope that his shoulder injury is now a thing of the past.
After tennis, all present celebrated Tisch Roos’s birthday with boerie rolls and beer.
Monday men’s tennis is going well and everyone has a good time with some really hard tennis the order of the day.
Wednesdays have become a bit quiet lately. Perhaps more will be keen to play now that it has cooled down a bit.
Visitors and prospective members are most welcome to come along on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons from about 2pm till light stops play.
Last Saturday, there was another good turnout, with five courts filled again.
Visitors Jenny Sim from Bellevue Tennis Club in Durban, Di Lund from Himeville and Sean Kelly joined in.
All visitors are reminded that they are most welcome to come along on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 2pm onwards.
