Bikers tackle extreme course
The route surely tested the riders' patience, grit and determination to finish the event.
THE 2015 South Coast Powasol Umzumbe Extreme promised yet another tough challenge through the farming areas of Southport and Umzumbe last Saturday.
Once again the organisers partnered with Powasol and welcomed South Coast Tourism on board. This year’s track was roughly 8km longer than last year’s. The route surely tested the riders’ patience, grit and determination to finish the event. The route directors went to great lengths to make this the best ride of the year finding many new sections, such as Grimbo, Good Luck, This is Umzumbe and Chicken Run to name a few, which were professionally set out.
“The event was a roaring success,” said organiser Cameron McBean. “It attracted hundreds of people from far and wide to come and experience first-hand the toughest one-day extreme in the country. This year 21 riders finished out of a field of 140. The South Coast Powasol Umzumbe Extreme is the epitome of what extreme is,” said Mr McBean.
The rain leading up to the event made for some nervous organisers and even more nervous riders. The terrain that the riders went through was some of the most difficult they have ever ridden, some riders taking close to 10 hours to finish the 31km loop.
The first biker home was Altus de Wet in a time of just over four hours, followed by local rider, Kyle Flanagan and rounding off the podium was Bernard Erasmus. “All three riders said that this was one of the toughest, if not the toughest event they have ever done on home soil,” said Mr McBean.
Organisers Cameron McBean and Bronson Louw along with their team from Powasol Extreme Events would like to thank everyone involved behind the scenes in making this one of the best Umzumbe Extremes yet.
