LEGEND Reapers MMA was invited to take part in the recent Shuriken MMA Dojo tournament.
There were 30 entries for kickboxing, MMA and grappling, each with their separate weight classes.
The weigh-ins were at noon and after all the weigh-in results and after medical tests and certificates were handed in, the kickboxing kicked off first.
After the kickboxing events it was time for the MMA (cage fighters) and grapplers to show off their skills.
Lee Thomas from Legend Reapers was the first fighter in her weight class for women under 50kg, up against Crizelle Taylor from Garage Boys.
Lee dominated the whole fight and won by TKO (technical knockout), in round one.
Rhey Cordier (under 70kg) was matched up with Shaun Ford from Gladiator Fight Academy.
Shaun was 3kg overweight and was given an hour to drop weight. He was weighed in again but was still 2kg overweight and Rhey was given the option to fight, or forfeit.
Rhey decided to take the fight, which was a nail-biting one, but had to settle for second place.
William Marais (under 70kg), who is also the coach of Legend Reapers MMA, was matched with Yuven Pillay from Team Kamikaze, fighting out of Durban.
After a tough first round, it went over to the second round. William dominated the second round and won with a TKO.
Ronel Potgieter (under 70kg) went up against Marina Auer from the Zoo.
Ronel dominated the grappling bout and won by decision in round one. This was her first grappling win.
Dean Viljoen (under 80kg) was matched with Chene Booysen from Team MMA.
Unfortunately his opponent went for the grappling and not the MMA.
Dean was matched again with Daan Pieterse from Ballito Bulldogs. Dean’s shoulder was dislocated and he got second place.

Legend Reapers trains at Umtentweni Library every Tuesday and Thursday from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
