Ganes, Lizzie clinch champs … and Big Fish laps the field
There was some exciting golf played last weekend.
GANES Munsami produced a second-day comeback to grab the Port Shepstone Country Club strokeplay title from Gavin van Wyk, who had led by four after day one.
Ganes, who won the matchplay last year, had rounds of 78 and 74 to Gavin’s 74 and 79.
Jarrod van Wyk was third on 80 and 76. Pre-tournament favourite, Graham Fabricius, had a frustrating time, carding 81 and 78.
Ken Marshall won the veteran’s division on 83 points.
Daan Swanepoel wrapped up the B division on 158, while Dr Ayoob Bux dominated in the C division, winning on 178.
In the women’s section, Lizzie Currie was too good for the field, returning 149 to win by six from defending champion Kim Strauss.
Silver division went to Yzelle Greyling on 171, bronze to Beryl Olden on 182, and copper to Liana Klopper on 70 points.
No stopping Big Fish
GAVIN Sole took winning championship titles to a new level when he scored 66 and 68 to cruise to a 17 shot victory at Southbroom Golf Club.
It was the fifth time in a row for him, and seventh overall.
Mike Anthony was second on 75 and 76. “Ah… the one that got away,” he said with a grin.
The women’s section was won by Geraldine Treherne on 173, four ahead of Janet Humphrey.
Bronze winner was Candida Amm on 191, two clear of Jean Cole.
Bronze Stableford winner was Heleen Hissey on 53 points, by three from Jeanette Peyios.
Overall nett winner was Rene Matthew on 146, from Jean Corfe on 151.
In the B division, Errol Rudman squeezed in ahead of Russel Mackenzie, scoring 165 to Russel’s 166.
Mike Jacquet needed some help from the countout to win the C division after he and George Haswell both had 74 points. Mike stormed home with 40 points on day two.
Overall nett went to Kerry Fielden on 139, four ahead of Cleve Walker.
Friday’s business day, sponsored by Pharaoh’s Construction was won after a chip off (from the putting green onto the 18th) by Chris Poole, Malcolm Greenland, Gary Purtell and Colin McKay.
Two wins ‘Taylor’ made for Margaret
WONDRA Bothma and Margaret Taylor won the Conni Day at Margate Country Club last week on 41 points.
The Wobblers’ alliance was won by George Bowie, Hans Beilhartz and Dave Boyd on 85 points, on a countout from Karl Zurfluh, Peter Rogers and Gert Bezuidenhout.
Arthur Tomlinson Floater went to Dave Parsons, Dieter Jucker and Jan Richter on 73 points.
Johan Stoltz won Thursday’s comp on 42 points, edging out Sandi Johnston on 41 points.
Saturday’s combined Stableford was won on 80 points by John Ford and Arthur Ehlert,
In second were Deon Meyer and Anton Kohrmann on 78 points.
Margaret Taylor won the women’s section on nett 71, counting out Chiappini Boshoff.
Interzone teams chosen
THE KwaZulu-Natal Country Districts Interzone tournament will be played at Port Shepstone CC this weekend, starting on Friday.
Southern KZN A – Gavin Sole (captain), Jan McDermott, Victor Mbhele, Graham Fabricius, Gary Purtell, Robert Mavundla, Elvis Khawula and Patrick Mavundla.
Southern KZN B – Dean Goldhill, Warren van Heerden, Ronnie Mtshaka, Douglas Sima, Sydney Shingange, Derick Zolyomi (captain), Wonder Nxumalo and Sbu Ntozakhe.
