IT is a fun car to drive. That’s the opinion of Thompson Motors sales executive Leon Welmans.
He was talking about the new 1.2 Datsun Go Lux, which is available at the Thompson Motors dealership in Port Shepstone.
“It’s got all the necessities too, that are so important for South Coast weather, such as air-conditioning and electric windows. Plus there’s power steering and airbags,” he said.
Leon grew up in a family that drove Datsun vehicles. “I’m thrilled to see that it’s back in South Africa and starting to make its presence felt,” he added.
He also encouraged Datsun fans to ‘watch this space’ as Thompson Motors has something interesting up its sleeve.
“We’re looking at launching a Thompson Motors Limited Edition which will see the vehicle have special mags, a roof spoiler and vinyls (stripes). At a special price,” he said.
So far there has been a pretty good response to the demo which has been seen around town. People have phoned in to find out more, saying the vehicle looks great.
One of the big pluses in the Go’s favour is that of fuel economy, a factor that cannot be ignored in today’s pressing economic times.
Leon reckoned that he got close to 20km per litre. “It’s really light on fuel but obviously it depends on how you drive it,” he laughed.
The little Go will probably suit youngsters looking for something modern and different.
“Youngsters are known to empty their parents wallets, so filling up a Go may not hurt too much,” said Leon.
It will also suit retired folk, who need a reliable run-around for short trips, like going to the shops, or to bowls.
To summarise: it’s stylish, athletic and bold. It’s big on space, too, for a small vehicle.
The Go comes with a powerful 1.2-l engine, using race-car technology adapted for maximum torque (104Nm at 4000rpm) and power (50kW at 5000rpm).
