Double ace at Sheppie’s Restoration Trophy

The Port Shepstone County Club was packed last weekend for the Halfway Toyota Restoration Cup - a two-day bonanza of golf, bowls and squash to commemorate the 1959 flood which devastated the facility.

They were so overjoyed that they opened a bar tab for half an hour for free drinks all round.

LADY luck certainly smiled down on the Port Shepstone Country Club last weekend with all facilities humming day and night.

Two golfers – Klaus Fritch and Louis Klopper – even scored holes-in-one (on the 4th and 17th respectively) both on Sunday. It is truly rare for a double ace in any amateur competition, worldwide.

The weekend started off with the monthly Business Day on the Friday, sponsored by Halfway Toyota.

Then the same sponsor hosted the two-day Restoration event which included golf, bowls and squash.

Participants, many visiting from all parts of the country, were also royally entertained with live music on Saturday night and Sunday.

The club’s premier fund-raiser – organised by Charles, Jenny Hulley and teams – commemorated the devastating flood of 1959 which virtually washed away the entire course and buildings.

Thanks to a tremendous effort by the community, the club was restored and today it is one of the jewels of the South Coast. Sheppie celebrated its centenary last year and was voted ‘Best of the South Coast’ in the Herald’s annual readers’ choice awards.
