THE first social knockout volleyball tournament of the year, held last Saturday, proved a success, with 14 teams entering. The excitement and enthusiasm were noticeable among volleyballers as the long and much-awaited season kicked off at the Marburg Sports Complex. The courts were jam-packed, as players and supporters enjoyed a day of thrilling action. The popular social section drew a huge crowd, as some of the legends of yesteryear made a return to the sport.

Group A winners were Youth in Action (YIA) and runners-up were New Covenant City Players (NCCP). Group B was very tightly contested with five of the six teams finishing on six points each. After the point tallying, Potters House Ministries (PHM) and Jumperz edged out the other teams to get into the semi-finals. There were three teams in the women’s/junior section. Bad Boys Junior, a primary school team, were champions after defeating the New Covenant City women’s team in the finals.

The semi-finals were very competitive and tight affairs with NCCP edging Jumperz in the third set and PHM overcoming YIA in the other semi-final. The final continued late into the night, with the exciting encounter finally going the way of PHM as it claimed the first 2016 knockout trophy.
