Drifters slide into town
Shane Gutzeit can increase his lead with a win in front of home fans.
DEZZI Raceway in Oslo Beach is fast becoming a favourite on the SupaDrift Series Championship circuit.
The world-class track will play host to the third race on the calendar, on May 27 and 28.
Local driver Shane Gutzeit is currently leading the series, and would love nothing better than winning on his home track.
“SupaDrift 3 is coming up and it’s certainly highly anticipated. There are a lot of guys coming up, especially from Cape Town, but all over. It’s hugely exciting,” said Shane.
As the series leader, he knows the focus is on him.
“I’ll obviously have a target on my back, and it adds to the pressure, especially at home. But sometimes you can feed off that,” he added.
Shane has already won two races this season, albeit in two different cars, but nevertheless, a win is a win.
He is hoping to keep the momentum going. “Hopefully I can make hay while the sun shines as they say and bring one home for the win. We’ll have to see how it goes,” he said.
Drifting is the fastest growing motor sport code globally, and South Africa is following similar trends.
It involves the intentional oversteering of cars, which causes a loss of traction in the rear wheels.
Drivers must maintain control from entry to exit of a corner with the intention of gaining style points from judges and spectators.
Points are determined by style, drift angle, tyre smoke and noise maintained around a fixed course.
Tickets are available at the door: R80 for adults and R50 for children.
There’s a whole lot more coming up at Dezzi Raceway, including the 2016 Dezzi Invitational Challenge from July 1 to 3, where some 4000 spectators are expected to arrive to watch.
The Historic Tour will also be in town soon (June 4).
In addition, while fast becoming recognised as the motoring hub of KwaZulu-Natal, it is also becoming synonymous as the ideal venue for a multitude of sports, outdoor and corporate events and launches, seeing the likes of superbikes, marathons and cycle races take place.
