Turkey trip beckons for tennis stars Ian and Raj
The two players are flying the South Coast flag with aplomb.
RAJ Naganna and Ian Ackerman have been short-listed to play for South Africa in the World Team Championships in Turkey in October.
This comes after some decent results at the Gauteng North Seniors in Pretoria last week.
Ian (66), who is a member at Douglas Mitchell finished second in singles and third in the doubles, while Raj (69) was fourth in singles and doubles, and third in the mixed doubles.
They played for KwaZulu-Natal in the 65+ age group. “Competition was tough,” said Raj.
Back home at Umtentweni Tennis Club, the weather was perfect, with blue skies and not a breath of wind.
Five courts were kept busy by members and visitors and it was a pleasure having Shauna Hudson, Rob Browne and Matt Holmes on court again.
George van der Merwe was on duty and provided some lovely snacks for tea and, since it was Colin Barker’s birthday, Kathy brought along a few of her usual tour de force platters to share with members.
Popular Cuban doctor, Jesús Rodriguez, is leaving Umtentweni to return to the Caribbean and Florida to be able to spend more time with his children and family members who now live there.
The club will be hosting a farewell evening after tennis on Saturday, July 9 to say “buen viaje and hasta luego” to Jesús, so please diarise this date.
Raj Naganna has kindly offered to provide a delicious chicken breyani – more information on the evening will follow shortly.
Club championships start on Saturday, July 23 and will continue over the following three Saturdays, culminating with the finals on August 13.
Anne Payn is on duty this Saturday, June 25 and Foxy Norton on July 2.
