Moth bowlers give hospice some wings
The tournament has been held in memory of Agnes Connellan for 16 years.
BOWLERS dug deep for South Coast Hospice during the recent Combined Ops Moths bowls tournament, held at Margate Bowling Club.
The day has traditionally been held in memory of Agnes Connellan, who died 16 years ago.
Sadly, her husband Rory died two days after this year’s tournament at the age of 96. However, he did get to hear about the fantastic amount raised, and was pleased.
A total of R62 000 was raised for hospice, an organisation that performs tireless and sometimes thankless work in the community.
Of this amount, Gavin van der Burgh (CEO of Pristine Fisheries and Afritex Ventures), based in Johannesburg, and family donated some R50 000.
A donation came in from Hong Kong based Alan Norman, son of the late John Norman, who was a long-time member at Margate BC.
The bowlers themselves contributed via the ‘Spider’ and the Moths chipped in a little as well.
Prizes paid out more than R8000 worth, so all in all, it was quite a day.
Winners on the day were Trevor Heywood, Annette Payn, Alan and Alison Dinning.
