From the fairways: Stuart is best and Lourens netts a prize, too

THE Idlers played their annual championships at Port Shepstone Country Club recently.
The champs were sponsored by Harvey World Travel. Sarah Margison (director) was on hand to present the prizes.
Winner was Stuart Betts on 88, by two from Boetie Thompson on 90.
Best nett went to Lourens Gouws (Idlers captain) on 72, by four from Rob Calder on 76.
Bruce Hill won the Stableford section on 35 points, with Dawie Griesel three points adrift.
Nearest the pins were Harry Dean (5th), Rob Calder (8th), Boetie Thompson (14th) and B Nolan (17th).
Most golf, on 115 blows, was Dick Wheelwright. Ken Marshall delivered the mightiest beat to win longest drive.
Tony bags monthly mug at Port Shepstone
JOHANN van Niekerk won the individual Stableford at Port Shepstone Country Club last Wednesday.
He carded 41 points to see off Phil Myburgh. Pete Govender was third on 37 points and Jesse Verster fourth on 36 points, followed by Gerald Koch on 35 points.
Saturday’s Auto Exec Monthly Mug saw Tony Fairbairn take the mug on nett 69.
Division winners were Greg Hornby (A div nett 69), Peppy Govender (B div nett 69) and Riaan Ahrens (C div nett 74).
Runners-up were Gavin van Wyk (A div nett 73), Mot Moleele (B div nett 73) and Terry Kotze (C div nett 75).
Best gross went to Greg Hornby and Graham Fabricius after both carded 75.
Beryl Olden had 37 points, one ahead off Jenny Hulley on 36 points.
It’s Classic time again
THE annual Southbroom Men’s Amateur Classic teed off on Monday this week. The four day event will finish this Friday.
Meanwhile, Tony Routledge and Olliver Ransome won last Saturday, carding 44 points to win by one from Osie Osborne and Brian Brasher, as well as Doug Butcher and Rob Williams.
The women’s comp was won by Tina Routledge and Sandy Luus on 41 points, by one from Di Morris and Mari Fielden, as well as Sandy Fitzgerald and Lindsey Owen.
Wednesday’s comp saw Malcolm Greenland and John Whitnal benefit from the countout, winning on 48 points, with Dries and Naude Barkhuizen forced into second spot.
In third on 45 points were Mervin and Gavin Edwards.
Irene Schanda and Tammy Murphy took first place in the women’s comp on 47 points, by three from Mary Carolan and Augustine D’ewes. In third place on 43 points were Julie Walker and Karen Ronayne.
Captain’s team won against the Vice Captains, 254 to 221 points.
Handicap league to tee off soon
THE Southern KwaZulu-Natal Handicap League starts on July 31.
Games will be played at first mentioned club. Fixtures are as follows:
July 31: Margate vs Selborne; Port Shepstone vs Umdoni; Bye – Southbroom.
August 21: Southbroom vs Umdoni; Margate vs Port Shepstone; Bye – Selborne.
September 18: Selborne vs Southbroom; Margate vs Umdoni; Bye – Port Shepstone.
October 16: Port Shepstone vs Selborne; Margate vs Southbroom; Bye – Umdoni.
November 20: Umdoni vs Selborne; Southbroom vs Port Shepstone; Bye – Margate.
