It’s all about the bass for Ferro
The new season is already under way for the bass fishermen.
THE South Coast Bass Association recently held its 28th annual general meeting and prize-giving at the Lobster Pot restaurant in Ramsgate.
Guest of honour was Pem Reneke from Pisces Predator kickboats.
The association has nine fish-offs during the 2015/2016 season.
Points are accumulated for weight of fish caught, amount of fish weighed and attendance. Fish must be over 300mm and must be released alive.
Only artificial lures are used and fishing takes place on private farm dams on the coast at the courtesy of farmers.
The categories are heaviest bass caught and most points accumulated in heaviest bag.
Both categories this year were won by vice-chairman Ferro van Greunen. He caught a bass of 2.98kg and also accumulated more than 40 points.
Second place for heaviest bass was Manus Erasmus (chairman). Third place went to Ferro van Greunen, having a great year.
Second place for most points in heaviest bag section was Boet Stewart. Third place went to Koos Bronkhorst, who also won the prize for most dedicated angler.
The new committee was elected and is as follows: Manus Erasmus (chairman), Ferro van Greunen (vice-chairman), Dalene Erasmus (treasurer), Anthony Card (events), Koos Bronkhorst, Hennie Ferreira and Shawn Stewart (all weigh-masters).
The first fish-off for the new season has already taken place and Hennie Ferreira caught a lovely bass of 1.8kg, winning the day.
Bass anglers are reminded that the Port Edward Bass Classic is coming up in November.
Regular fishing
Shad are still keeping the local fishermen busy, but fortunately they’re closer to home – and not all over ‘Europe’ as reported last week!
In fact, there have been huge shoals, some so big they have been mistake as shoals of bait fish.
One of these shoals was spotted off Manaba last week Saturday, and according to one fishermen, the game fish that hammered them were a sight to behold.
Unfortunately this only lasted a short while, but still, quite something. The way the game fish were hitting them suggests they must have been tuna or bonito.
This was confirmed when Dean Winn landed a bonito around the 8kg mark at Pothole. A very big bonnie, indeed.
A few ‘kingies’ have been hooked as well, and there was a report of a couta caught on live shad at Margate pier.
The recent cold front did affect the shad but at the areas where shoals have appeared there has been some good fishing fun, with mostly decent sized catches.
