Wayne’s World: Patience is paramount
The growth in the club has been exciting to watch.
RUNNING interest on the South Coast is on a massive increase as past and new runners tie their shoelaces in the quest to either get fit or to do something outrageous, like run the Two Oceans Marathon.
Two of our newest members Wesley and Natasha Caple, are just two of the hopefuls who have Two Oceans 2017 on the agenda.
As chairman of South Coast Striders I find the situation of growth most exciting as the membership continues to grow while in turn the running groups and enthusiasm swell.
As far as first-timers to the sport go and this applies to those who have been out for a while, patience is paramount. Guys and girls, get out there and do your walking.
Go every odd day and once you find you can manage about 15km a week, introduce jogging to your body.
Jog around 30 seconds at a time and make sure while you are doing this that you are able to talk without too much stress.
As time moves on you can increase your time of 30 seconds to a minute and before you know it you will be doing a kilometre at a time. This is a feeling that is most rewarding.
The reason to take it easy is to avoid injury. There is nothing more destroying than getting an injury early on in your sport, you will probably lose interest and never attempt it again.
Just a last warning though, running becomes very addictive and your health will be compromised for the better.
For the advanced runners it’s key to note that quality is better than quantity.
The training programme that has been put in place over the last four weeks is starting to showing dividends.
John Ross, a young man who attends on a regular basis, is turning into quite the speed machine as he trains with Michael Mzobe and Albert Nyembezi (to mention a few) and his efforts can clearly be seen by his top notch recovery times after training.
If you are a member or not and need more information on the running scene contact me, and remember you do not have to be a fit runner to join us, it is why we are here.
Striders will be running 24km from Uvongo Spar to Mac Banana this Sunday, July 24, starting at 6am.
Everyone is welcome to join. If you can assist with seconding or have any queries please contact me at 082 6043073.
