Warriors blast Sentraal away
The team has made it to the quarter-finals of the knockout competition.
TIENIE Viljoen had one of his best games of the season to help the Riversmead South Coast Warriors beat Sentraal in Castle Murray Cup rugby action in Dundee last Saturday.
It was a cold weekend up north for the South Coasters, but the really cold weather hadn’t arrived just yet, fortunately.
In the end the Warriors won quite easily, 54-22.
They now play Varsity College at home this Saturday afternoon. It’s a game they can win.
Toti play Crusaders, UKZN Impis play Jaguars and Collegians are up against Rovers. (Home teams mentioned first).
In Dundee, tries were scored by centre Ra-ik Ploker (2), wing Jackson Mqadi (2), centre Tienie Viljoen, eighth-man Juan van den Berg, prop Tian Malherbe and fly-half Graham Hendriks.
Tienie slotted six out of seven conversions. Skipper Van den Berg popped over one as well, a la Zinzan Brooke!
There were no new players and players had to have featured in three league matches to quality for the Murray Cup.
Man of the match (forwards) was lock Jonty Fortuin, who had an outstanding game.
“He was brilliant in the line-outs and excellent on defence as well as being a handful for the opposition at the break-downs. He was also difficult to stop with the ball in hand,” said coach Christo Henderson.
Scrumhalf Chris Mitchell also had a very solid game, helping to enforce the Warriors’ gameplan.
“He lifted the speed of the game when we had to do, which proved the difference when the game opened up. His service off first and second phase ball was outstanding on the day,” said Christo.
Tienie was the Castle Man of the Match, and received a cheque for R1 000 compliments of Castle Lager.
“He scored a brilliant try under the posts which put his personal tally at 17 for the game. He was rock-solid on defence and a big headache for the opposition on attack. He also had a hand in four of the other tries,” said Christo.
“We also want to extend a special thanks to Paul Apostolides of Riversmead Farms, as well as to Danie and Gerhard Steyn from Status Panel Beaters who made extra contributions to the Warriors last weekend in order to allow the players to stay over in Dundee, including meals,” said Christo.
In terms of junior rugby there’s lots happening, with a junior tournament at Douglas Mitchell Sports Ground this Sunday (31st) from 8am.
The following weekend it’s time for juniors to impress in Durban when the Duikers trials take place over two days.
