Junior fishermen reel ’em in
This is the final year that Shelly Beach will be holding the event as it moves off to the Eastern Cape next year.
SHELLY Beach Ski-boat Club hosted the South African Deep Sea Angling Association (SADSAA) Junior Gamefish Nationals event for the second consecutive year following a very successful 2015 competition.
This year was a bumper event with 23 teams in total, comprising of ten U19 teams) and 13 U16 teams from seven provinces. The weather played its part with all teams fishing the full five days from Monday to Friday.
Fishing was difficult at first, however some notable catches were made and meritorious fish included a 19,7kg tuna, a 19.3kg tuna, and a 10,9 kg green job fish.
The most common species weighed daily was yellowfin tuna which needed to be a minimum of six kilograms to count for points.
Team placings changed daily throughout the week but the consistent teams that weighed fish each day dominated the leading positions.
In the U19 category, the race for first place was firmly between KZN U19 White and the SADSAA team.

The U16 category was also dominated by two of the KZN teams, but day five proved to be the decider with good fishing forecast ahead of the cold front.
On the last day team positions switched with some teams bringing excellent fish to the scales.
In the U19 category the KZN White team managed to maintain their overall lead to take gold, followed by SADSAA and then the KZN U19 Black team who took bronze.
In the U16 category the KZN sides were unable to hold onto their placings and slid down to fourth and fifth positions, while great performances by two Southern Gauteng teams and Free State saw them grab the medals.
