Now with the Olympics coming up, and golf back in after many, many years, sub-editors may be tempted to let it slide!
But in more serious matters, Jaco van Zyl created a few waves when he opted out of The Open and PGA to rest ahead of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Unlike many of the world’s top golfers who have withdrawn mainly due the zika virus, Jaco feels a chance to play in the Olympics is one not to be missed.
It’s no secret golfers have a hectic travel schedule and so the former Port Shepstone Country Club member stayed home to rest.
His thinking was that the majors will always be there but a chance to go to the Olympics again would be slim.
The withdrawal of Branden Grace, Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel opened the door for Jaco. He grabbed it with both hands.
Only two golfers from each country are allowed to go.
He will be joined by Brandon Stone, the current SA Open champion and one of the most exciting talents to emerge in recent times.
The format in the Olympics is four rounds of strokeplay with no cut.
Jaco was a member at Port Shepstone at around the turn of the century.
It was while he was here that he won the SA Amateur and also played number one in the KZN side that won the SA Interprov at Royal Durban in 1999.
In recent times Jaco has made a remarkable comeback after major knee surgery.
While it may be disappointing that the superstars won’t be there, it’s a great chance for Jaco to ‘go for gold’.
