From the fairways: Golfers mourn Stan Date

SOUTHBROOM Golf Club members are mourning the death of long-time member Stan Date (76) who died on July 26 after an illness bravely borne.
Stan’s four children were all able to make it out in time from Australia and the UK to see him before he passed away.
He was one of the characters at the club and enjoyed playing in a regular game with Dave Page, Duncan Seth and the late Tony Steppe.
Together with Tony, he stocked the club dams with fish from his dams on his farm and also planted and trimmed some of the trees on the course.
Stan and his wife Viv tended many spit braais at the club and in the village.
He always entertained all with his booming laugh, joke telling and fabulous sense of humour, not to mention his remarkable general knowledge about just about everything, affectionately earning him the nickname ‘Enos’ (Enos everything).
A memorial service was held at St Simon’s Anglican Church last Thursday, followed by a well-attended wake at the club.
In regular news, play in the Audi Centre Margate golf day this Saturday, August 6.
Normal green fees and comp fees will apply. All those playing will receive a sleeve of TaylorMade balls.
Audi Centre Margate is sponsoring fabulous prizes and the chance for members to qualify for the all-expenses paid trip the national final of the Audi Quattro Cup at Zimbali later in the year.
Wednesday’s comp was won by Sharon Turnbull-Jackson on 33 points.
Graham Volck won the men’s comp on 41 points.
Friday’s special business day (Trafalgar Presbyterian Church), was won by Dries Barkhuizen and Johan Erasmus on 49 points.
Runners-up were Gavin Sole and Yvonne Janvier on 46 points, on a countout from Mike Jacquet and Geoff Skelton.
Saturday’s President’s Tophy saw Geraldine Treherne and Julie Walker take top honours on 42 points, as did Errol Amm and Dix Vorster on 44 points.
Members enjoyed seeing Allen Hooper again, out from Australia for a visit. He teamed up with Paul Cole and finished in a tie for second on 42 points.
Jaco unleashes monster hit
THERE was a small field for the Wobblers game at Margate Country Club last Wednesday, due to wet weather.
It was won by Freddie Boshoff who had Roy Nolan and Otto Mutschler as pivots, on 77 points.
The Arthur Tomlinson Floater went to Hans Dallinger, Roy Nolan and Otto Mutschler on 65 points.
Thursday’s comp saw Louie Carreira dominate on 41 points, three ahead of Eddie Davies, Johan Stolz and Jane Davies.
On Saturday, the men played a combined Stableford and the winners were Zaunru Coetzee and Heber de Beer on 81 points.
Five adrift were Riaan Croucamp and Johan Wentzel.
Longest drive was clobbered by Jaco van der Wal, a beat of around 320 metres.
The women’s comp was won by Una McLachlan, Margaret Ford and Lesley Erasmus on 77 points, two ahead of Barbara Jackson, Rino Rita and Jane Davies (pivot).
Shaun and Stuart win
SHAUN Nathanson and Stuart Harrison won the Saturday comp at Port Shepstone Country Club last Saturday, carding 48 points.
Runners-up were Hans and Marietjie Stols on 46 points, with Graham Fabricius and Anne Baldrey next on 45 points.
Fourth spot was snapped up by Fanie Kuhn and Bevis Fairbrother on 44 points.
There was no comp on the Wednesday due to the wet weather.
Fast start for Umdoni
UMDONI Park Golf Club picked up where they left off last year in terms of the 2016 Southern KZN Handicap League.
The defending champions beat Port Shepstone CC 9-3 in the opening round at Margate CC.
In the other game, Selborne Park showed they will also be a threat this year, edging hosts Margate CC 6,5-5,5 in what was a shock result.
Southbroom had a bye. The next round is at Southbroom on August 21. Southbroom play Umdoni and Margate take on Port Shepstone.
