IF last Sunday’s Port Shepstone Rotary/Thompson Nissan Soapbox Festival of Speed is anything to go by, then, in all honesty, this event can only go on to become something quite special in the future.
Hopefully it will become an annual feature on the South Coast calendar and a reason for the community to get together for some fun. Plus there is loads of tourist-attracting potential.
The Rotary Club of Port Shepstone needs to take a collective bow. As a team, the Rotarians helped to pull it off.

Soapbox racing, so popular eons ago, has been revived … and long may it last.
Desmond Gutzeit obviously needs to be thanked for allowing the use of the track, Dezzi Raceway.
There was a buzz in the air, and it wasn’t only the sound of some microlights flying overhead. Or the helicopter that dropped off emcee for the day, Scot Scott.
You could sense the excitement the moment you arrived at the venue.
Perhaps a slightly confusing part was not knowing exactly where to park. It was advised to drive one’s car closer to all the action. Along the track!
What a bonus that turned out to be. Most people can only dream about ever getting on a racetrack. So, this was quite fun, even if you were only going about 60km/h.
Clive Thompson of Thompson Nissan said the event had been fantastic, very exciting.
“It was a complete family event, with children and everyone involved,” he said.
Good news is that this is just the start.
“We are indebted to Des for his enthusiasm shown and for the use of his track. He was vitally involved and delighted with the success of the day,” said Clive.
“We’re already preparing for next year so start building your cart now.”
In terms of the action on the day, there were one or two mishaps but in general, safety was good.

There weren’t too may restrictions on the carts in terms of construction and design. But they did need to be safe. And have good brakes!
Three charities have been identified as beneficiaries of funds raised, namely South Coast Hospice (Kingfisher House inpatient unit), SPCA and Cansa South Coast.
